The president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured that he could become “Mr. Veto” if the Democrats win the majority in Congress after the midterm elections this Tuesday.
The president explained to the Fox News network his strategy in a hypothetical scenario in which the opposition controls the legislative chambers: “I guess I will become ‘Mr. Veto’.”
As he explained, his initial plan would consist of systematically blocking the legislative initiatives promoted by a Democratic majority, to later force them to negotiate agreements.
“It would not be the first time. You have a president who does not have the House of Representatives or the Senate, they send proposals, the vetoes and, finally, after a month or two of vetoing everything, they come closer and you close an agreement,” Trump argued about the negotiation dynamics that he plans to apply, in the Fox video published this Sunday.
Despite outlining this roadmap of institutional confrontation, the US president expressed his confidence that the Republicans will maintain legislative control after the elections, which would avoid having to resort to this blocking strategy.
