Donald Trump continues to fuel the controversy generated a few days ago over the possible readings of a photograph he took with Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy. On this occasion, the magnate has harshly attacked the Italian leader by ensuring that her “popularity is at rock bottom” because she “turned her back on the United States” in the conflict against Iran.
The former US president has insisted that Meloni “asked again and again to take a photo” with him at the G7 Summit in France; an interaction that the prime minister denied on Friday, also stating that she was “stunned” by claims she called “made up.”
As usual, Trump has used his social network Truth Social to share a new post in which he explains: “his popularity in Italy is at rock bottom, possibly because he turned his back on the United States – a country that truly loves and protects Italy – by refusing to prevent Iran from obtaining or developing a nuclear weapon (although NATO did the same, by the way!).”
This Saturday, Trump reproached Meloni for not allowing the use of “Italian landing strips – which represented a great logistical inconvenience -, despite the fact that the United States contributes hundreds of billions of dollars a year to protect Italy and other ‘supposed’ NATO allies.”
Furthermore, he believes that Meloni intends to approach him solely to remedy his low approval ratings: “Now, after the military defeat of Iran at the hands of the United States, she wants to be friends again to ‘improve her numbers’. No, thank you!!! President DJT.”
Meloni’s response to Trump
This same Saturday, Meloni once again responded to the American politician by stating: “my popularity is not your business, I ask you to focus on yours.” He did so through a message written in English on his Instagram account.
The Italian Prime Minister clarifies her Government’s position: “I did the same with respect to the American military bases in Italy. Their use is governed by agreements that we have always respected and that cannot be violated while I am Prime Minister. Italy remains a sovereign nation,” before stating: “In any case, my popularity is not your business. I suggest that you focus on yours.”
Finally, he wanted to settle the issue with a subsequent publication in Italian in which he stated that “I don’t think this is a show up to our task.”
