It looks like Artificial Intelligence, but it is not. In recent days, several videos have gone viral on social networks showing the historic snowfall that has fallen on the Kamchatka peninsula and has buried several cities.

Last Friday, there was news that at least two people had died in Petropavlovsk as a result of snow falling from roofs after heavy snowfall that forced local authorities to declare a state of emergency at the municipal level and use prisoner trucks for public transportation.

Two deceased

The first deceased was a 60-year-old man, whose body was found the day before while cleaning a patio into which an avalanche of snow had collapsed from the roof.

Later, another city resident was trapped by snow that fell from a roof. The emergency services that arrived at the scene tried to save his life to no avail.

The local governor, Yevgeny Beliáev, reported that “despite the cessation of rainfall in the regional capital” the “complex situation” remained: “It will take days to alleviate the consequences of a series of powerful cyclones that followed one another. The large amount of snow does not allow all transportation routes to be cleaned quickly,” he said.

Prisoner trucks as public transport

Due to problems with transportation, the Russian National Guard enabled trucks to transport prisoners to support this public service, as reported on its Telegram channel, where it published photos of the gray vehicles with bars on the windows.

Belyaev warned the city’s inhabitants that “the danger of avalanches in the mountains and snow and ice falling from roofs remains.”

In the last week, Russia has suffered intense snowfalls that have covered practically the entire national territory, from the European region to the Far East.

Precipitation in Moscow has set record levels, as has in St. Petersburg, the regions of Tver and Saratov, the city of Yekaterinburg in the Urals, and even the warm southern region of Krasnodar, on the shores of the Black Sea.
