In a momentous occasion, the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival has been officially reinstated by the Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, marking a revival after a hiatus of 14 years.
Announced through an official statement on the state government’s X platform, the revival of the festival was met with great enthusiasm.
Exciting images from the festival were shared by the state government, with a caption that read, “Governor Kefas breathes new life into the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival, breaking a 14-year silence.
“The festival kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at the picturesque Lake Nwonyo, situated in the Ibi Local Government area of Taraba State.”
The Nwonyo Fishing and Cultural Festival holds the distinction of being one of the oldest events of its kind in Africa.
With a history dating back 96 years, the festival traditionally takes place at Nwonyo Lake, located approximately five kilometers north of Ibi town.
The festival program includes captivating activities such as canoe processions, vibrant cultural exhibitions, swimming showcases, competitive boat races, traditional masquerade performances, and the highly anticipated fish-catching competition, serving as the festival’s main attraction.
