The House of Representatives Steps in on Alleged Discrimination Against Nigerians in Chinese Supermarket in Abuja

In Abuja, concerns have been raised by Nigeria’s House of Representatives regarding recent claims of discrimination against Nigerians at a Chinese-owned supermarket. The House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group has taken on the responsibility of investigating the issue and has urged Nigerians to stay calm, encouraging a thorough inquiry into the allegations.

Reports surfaced about a particular Chinese supermarket on Umaru Yar’Adua road in Abuja, affiliated with the China General Chamber of Commerce, implementing discriminatory practices that restricted Nigerians from shopping at their store. Despite the supermarket owners refuting these allegations, the Nigerian Government, through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, sealed the supermarket on Monday.

Responding on Wednesday, the Nigerian Parliament, in a statement co-signed by Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, and House Spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi Jnr., denounced any type of discrimination. They highlighted the significance of the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of China.

The joint statement emphasized the mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries, condemning discrimination or bias. It noted the many collaborations in infrastructure, trade, education, and healthcare that have strengthened the bond between Nigeria and China.

The Parliament pledged a thorough investigation into the matter and assured that all necessary steps would be taken to address any concerns. They urged all parties to handle the situation sensitively and constructively, ensuring that isolated incidents do not damage the strong friendship between Nigeria and China.

With a commitment to overseeing the fair treatment of Nigerians in foreign establishments within Nigeria, the House of Representatives promised close monitoring and working closely with relevant stakeholders. Additionally, the Green Chamber affirmed its dedication to promoting cultural exchange, economic partnerships, and mutual understanding between the two nations.
