Protest by NLC Members Leads to Closure of KEDCO and NERC Offices in Kano

On Monday, a large group of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) members took action by shutting down the offices of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) in protest against the recent increase in power tariffs nationwide. In a related move, the organized Labour also picketed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) offices in Kano for the same reason. Workers of KEDCO and NERC were prevented from entering their offices by the protesting NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) members. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has taken action by closing down the headquarters of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) in Plateau State due to the recent hike in electricity tariffs. Reports indicate that members of the labor union physically blocked the main entrance of the company, resulting in the staff of the DisCo being unable to access the main office. In response to the failure of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Distribution Companies (DisCos) to meet their demand for a complete reversal of the electricity tariff increase, NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) announced plans to shut down offices of these entities nationwide.
