House Representatives Caution FIRS for Disregarding Parliament’s Summons

For not honoring its invitation, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, has received a warning from the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The committee has accused Adedeji of showing contempt towards parliament.

During an investigative hearing on revenue leakages in Abuja, PAC Chairman Rep. Bamidele Salam expressed his dissatisfaction with Adedeji’s repeated absence despite being invited four times by the committee. Salam stated that official letters and messages were sent to Adedeji via mail and WhatsApp but received no response.

Salah criticized Adedeji’s behavior as irresponsible and arrogant, cautioning that there would be consequences if the defiance continues. He highlighted that the FIRS failed to collect the value-added tax (VAT) it should have gathered from transactions via Remitta.

He revealed that VAT funds owed to FIRS were instead being shared among CBN, banks, and Remitta, resulting in the accumulation of hundreds of billions. The committee demanded FIRS’s presence to collect the outstanding funds, which the service has so far refused to do.
