Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra Leader Sets Conditions for Trial Resumption, Nigerian Govt Objects

Amidst the resumption of the trial at the Federal High Court Abuja, the Federal Government has opposed the conditions outlined by detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, for the continuation of legal proceedings against him.

Agreeing to expedite the prosecution process, Kanu, through his legal representative Aloy Ejimakor, highlighted three prerequisites that need to be fulfilled before the trial can proceed.

One of the stipulations included the reinstatement of his previously granted bail to adequately prepare for his defense, which he alleges was revoked unjustly based on erroneous claims by the government.

Additionally, Kanu urged for the withdrawal of the arrest warrant issued against him following accusations of breaching bail conditions and fleeing the country, and emphasized the necessity for his lawyer to have unrestricted access to him as mandated by law.

The activist expressed his readiness to undergo an accelerated trial once these conditions are met.

On the contrary, the Federal Government, represented by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, rebuffed the conditions, branding them as groundless, vexatious, and frivolous.

Awomolo contended that since the bail plea had been rejected by the court previously, it cannot be overturned, suggesting that Kanu should pursue an appeal at the Court of Appeal to challenge the decision.

Meanwhile, proceedings are ongoing before Justice Binta Nyako.
