Peter Obi’s stance on LP crisis: Focus is on rebuilding Nigeria, not forming new party

Addressing his absence at the national convention of Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State, 2023 LP presidential candidate Peter Obi clarified that his commitment lies in rebuilding Nigeria, rather than creating a new political entity.

During an appearance on X Space program hosted by Parallel Facts, Obi pointed out that he opted out of the convention due to the leadership’s failure, led by Julius Abure, to engage in extensive consultations with key stakeholders before proceeding with the event. Emphasizing the necessity of proper procedures to revive the party, he expressed his stronger inclination towards revitalizing Nigeria over founding a new Labour Party.

“Our pledge was to enhance Nigeria, not to establish a New Labour Party,” remarked Obi.

In addition, he endorsed the notion of establishing a framework for the ‘Obidient’ movement, citing the global custom where movements coalesce into groups and become integral parts of the political landscape.

A power struggle between factions led by Julius Abure and Apapa Lamidi has emerged, with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) opposing Abure’s leadership within the party.

Despite controversy surrounding the national convention in Anambra State, Abure was reelected to his position.
