Same-Sex Marriage Legalized in Northern Ireland
Legalizing same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland has been announced following a change in the law by an October 2019 Westminster bill.
The law, effective from today (Monday 13 January), allows same-sex couples to register to marry in the country, and also recognizes the union of those who are already married.
The initial same-sex weddings are anticipated to occur in February as couples are required to indicate their intention to marry 28 days before the wedding.
This legal adjustment aligns Northern Ireland with the rest of the UK, including England, Scotland and Wales, which had all legalized same-sex marriages since 2014.
