Ogun State Governor appoints Tunde Onakoya as Sports Ambassador

Mr. Tunde Onakoya, the National Master of Chess and the current Guinness World Record Holder for the longest Chess Marathon in history, has been appointed as the Sports Ambassador of Ogun State by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Governor Abiodun made this announcement during a meeting with Mr. Onakoya at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. He also revealed plans to kick off the State Chess Competition in honor of Mr. Onakoya, recognizing his outstanding achievements on the global stage.

Impressed by the determination and resilience displayed by the National Chess Master, Governor Abiodun highlighted Mr. Onakoya’s role as an inspiration to young people nationwide. He commended the establishment of the ‘Chess in Slums Africa’ foundation, emphasizing the importance of sharing his story to uplift and motivate other children.

As the State Sports Ambassador, Mr. Onakoya will spearhead the organization of the Ogun State Chess Competition, extending from the local government level to the state level. Governor Abiodun also announced the creation of the Tunde Onakoya Prize to be awarded to the winner of the competition.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by Nigerian youths, the governor drew parallels between their struggles and the journey of the Chess Master. He praised Mr. Onakoya for his integrity and dedication to success, underscoring his significant contribution to Ogun State’s reputation through his accomplishments.

Expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming support received from Nigerians, Mr. Onakoya shared his pride in representing Nigeria. He recalled his difficult upbringing and highlighted chess as a pathway out of poverty, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking in shaping his future.

Mr. Onakoya expressed his deep honor and appreciation for the recognition bestowed upon him by Nigerians worldwide, royal figures, and Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun from his home state of Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
