Odinkalu: EFCC lacks authority to prosecute individuals for abusing Naira

Professor Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) does not possess the legal jurisdiction to bring charges against those who abuse the Nigerian currency, Naira.

In criticism of the EFCC, Odinkalu questioned the agency’s decision to arrest Bobrisky, a popular crossdresser who was recently convicted and sentenced to six months in prison for such an offense.

He emphasized that the act of spraying Naira notes does not align with the EFCC’s mandate to prosecute such cases.

Odinkalu pointed out, “The EFCC, as defined by law, is tasked with addressing ‘economic and financial crimes’ which entail non-violent illegal activities aimed at acquiring wealth unlawfully, either individually or through organized means, in violation of existing economic legislation and government regulations.”
