Nigerian Man’s Account of Clashing with His Newly Married Younger Sister After She Declined to Wash His Clothes (Photos)

A Facebook user known as Fanta Boy Ekwem, hailing from Umuchu, Anambra state, took to a popular Facebook group on Monday, January 7, to express his frustration over an altercation with his younger sister. He lamented how she ”insulted and fought him” after he questioned her for not washing his clothes as he had requested.

According to his account, his sister is not yet ‘fully married’ as her fiance had only done the introductory rites and paid her bride price. Ekwem mentioned that she still resides in their family home and will continue to do so until her fiance completes the final traditional rights on Easter day.

Sharing a photo of himself wearing a torn shirt, which he claimed was a result of the altercation with his younger sister, Ekwem expressed his sentiments;

Normally, I don’t bring up family matters online, but I have to share this for you guys to weigh in, because everyone who was present when it happened sided with her.

She is married and so what? I am just so saddened by this morning’s incident. This won’t just end like this, I swear.

We have four girls in our family, two older than me and I am older than two. One of the girls, whom I am older than, got married (the groom only did the introduction and some related rites). She is still in our family because the groom has yet to conclude the traditional rights, in accordance with the Igbo culture.

Yesterday, as I was leaving, I brought out my dirty clothes, as seen in the pictures, and asked her to wash them so that I could take them back with me today. She didn’t respond, so I left. I returned at night and went to bed without inquiring about the clothes I had asked her to wash.

This morning, as I was preparing to leave for Lagos, I woke up around 6 AM to pack my belongings. I called her to bring me the clothes she had washed, but she still didn’t respond. I thought of checking in the back yard if she had put them to dry there. I found my clothes in the same spot where I had left them for her to wash yesterday.

I asked her why she didn’t wash my clothes, and she avoided responding. I instructed her to leave whatever she was doing and wash my clothes for me, or else I would deal with her. As soon as I said that, she started to argue, saying things like, “Do you not realize that I am married now (imaro na m alu go di)? Why would you tell me to wash clothes for you? Now is not the time, please don’t disturb me” (these were the things she said). I said to her, “What kind of nonsense marriage have you had?”

She started insulting me, a girl whom I am older than by a year and 6 months talking to me in this way? I got angry and hit her. I couldn’t believe it when she fought back and tore my clothes.

I am upset, not just because she fought me, but because my family members sided with her. Everyone was against me – why would I ask her to wash my clothes? I should show her some respect as a married woman.

You guys should be the judge; she is not yet fully married to the man, she is still in our house, and the man is coming on Easter to finalize the traditional rights… Look at how she tore my clothes.
