The Catholic Church’s Stance on Prophecy: Bishop Rebukes Father Mbaka’s Prediction on Imo Governorship

Bishop Lucius Ugorji of Umuahia Catholic Diocese and the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have both criticized Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka for his New Year prophecy regarding Governor Emeka Ihedioha losing his seat to Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress.

Reacting to the prophecy, CAN emphasized its opposition to politically driven prophecies. Bishop Lucius Ugorji of Umuahia Catholic Diocese, on the other hand, emphasized that the Catholic Church does not engage in fortune telling.

Imo State’s CAN leader, Senior Apostle Godson Ibeji, stated:

“CAN has consistently opposed such politically motivated prophecies and at the same time strives to maintain the standards that guide and regulates the practice of Christianity. The Cleric’s prophecy, while the matter is before the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, is without substance and causes confusion.”

Bishop Lucius Ugorji of Umuahia Catholic Diocese expressed that the Catholic Church does not grant priests the authority to predict court case outcomes. He urged the people of Imo not to rely on guesswork from preachers, but to pray for their candidate to prevail at the Supreme Court.

He stated:

“The Catholic Church is not into fortune telling and does not authorize any Priest to make predictions on her behalf regarding court case outcomes.

“Anyone who speaks on such a matter is expressing his personal opinion. We will continue to follow this principle until we restore integrity to the practice of priesthood”
