NCDC and Dettol Respond to Funke Akindele’s Arrest

Following the arrest of actress Funke Akindele-Bello for violating the lockdown order in Lagos state, both the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and Dettol Nigeria have issued statements.

Funke and her husband, JJC Skillz, hosted a birthday party at their Amen estate home in Lagos state, which was attended by a large number of people, contradicting the social distancing order of the Lagos state government. She was apprehended by the Lagos state police command, while her husband, singer Naira Marley, has been summoned for questioning.

It is worth noting that shortly after the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in Lagos, Funke participated in a video campaign sponsored by Dettol, promoting the importance of proper hygiene practices such as handwashing and social distancing. However, many Nigerians criticized her on Twitter for disregarding the social distancing measures she advocated for in the Dettol campaign.

Subsequent to the news of her arrest, Dettol Nigeria posted on its Twitter page, stating that as a responsible organization, it does not tolerate any violations of COVID-19 guidelines and expressing concern about the situation. Meanwhile, NCDC clarified that it has not engaged brand ambassadors as part of its response to COVID-19.
