Never before since the Second World War have there been so many conflicts simultaneously in the world: 56 open conflicts and 122.6 million displaced people. Conclusions from the annual report of Doctors Without Borders, which also warns that humanitarian organizations have become a direct target in wars such as the one in Gaza or the great forgotten Sudan.
The figures are dramatic: 162,000 fatalities in the last year in armed conflicts and also a record of displaced people who have had to abandon their homes because of the war or due to the dramatic consequences of climate change.
Health workers and humanitarian workers have become a direct target
MSF warns that humanitarian workers and doctors have become direct targets in wars such as those in Gaza or Sudan, with more than 80% of health centers disabled due to violence. And its latest report puts the main problem on the table: “impunity”. An impunity that in the case of Israel is especially bloody, as denounced by the co-author of the report and co-director of the Institute for Conflict Studies and Humanitarian Action (IECAH), Jesús A. Núñez.
The law of the jungle in Gaza
Núñez warns of the risk that the “law of the jungle” will end up prevailing in Gaza when Donald Trump reaches the White House. If with Benjamin Netanyahu “it is already an open bar,” acknowledges the co-author of the report, one cannot even imagine what will happen in the Middle East when Trump takes office.
The balance so far in Gaza is devastating: more than 44,200 dead and more than 100,000 directly injured in the armed conflict between Israel and Hamas, the majority civilians.
The great forgotten: the war in Sudan
Despite “extreme violence” that shows no signs of abating in 2025, Doctors Without Borders denounces that unfortunately “deliberate forgetfulness” has taken hold in the war in Sudan. The war in Sudan – which began in April 2023 – already adds 11.8 million displaced, of which 3.1 million have fled the country. AND It is estimated that half of the population needs humanitarian aid: the largest famine in the world.
