The unprecedented migration crisis recently registered in Ceuta, where more than 70,000 people managed to cross the border irregularly, has raised the level of alert throughout the European continent. In this climate of extreme border tension, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has vindicated the impact of her Executive’s policies by ensuring that, today, “the vast majority of European nations” share and support the firm line defended by Rome.
Schengen protection and internal security
In an interview given this Friday to the economic newspaper ‘Milano Finance‘, the president has outlined the guidelines that, in her opinion, should guide community policy imminently. Meloni has stressed that Europe’s absolute priority must be to protect its external borders against what he describes as “uncontrolled immigration.”
As detailed, this tight perimeter control is the only effective way to eliminate any risk associated with security and terrorism, which in turn makes it possible to defend the freedom of internal movement that constitutes the fundamental pillar of the Schengen system.
Maximum vigilance before August 15
In parallel with her demands on the European institutions and echoing the general fear of coordinated movements on social networks, the head of the Italian Government has issued a serious warning internally.
Meloni has insisted that the forecasts point to a “possible new wave” of migration ahead of August 15, a scenario that forces the Italian authorities to remain “extremely vigilant” and not lower their operational guard.
Faced with this high-pressure situation, the Prime Minister has guaranteed that her cabinet will continue to adopt all the necessary measures to contain the flows and has promised that her Government “will continue working to consolidate the results achieved so far” in terms of deterrence.
