March Sees Kano NHRC Receiving 130 Human Rights Complaints

In March, the National Human Rights Commission in Kano State fielded 130 complaints alleging human rights violations.

Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, the NHRC state Coordinator, disclosed this during an interview in Kano on Tuesday.

Out of the total, 111 cases have been addressed, leaving 19 pending. Of these cases, 86 are centered around children’s rights, women, and gender issues.

During the same period, 18 complaints were about abandonment of family responsibilities and domestic violence.

“The remaining 26 cases pertain to labor rights and other matters,” Abdullahi said.

The commission also engaged in mediating marital disputes and family matters. Abdullahi encouraged couples to exercise patience and work together to manage their obligations effectively.

An earlier report by PUNCH Online revealed that over three months, the NHRC grappled with 4,211 complaints of human rights violations, encompassing issues from killings and kidnappings to domestic violence and children’s rights concerns.

In January, the commission received 1,147 human rights violation complaints, followed by 1,484 in February, and 1,580 in March. (

Established in accordance with international standards and resolutions, the NHRC is a government commission tasked with advancing, safeguarding, and enforcing human rights across the nation.

Functioning as an independent extra-judicial entity, its initiatives include public awareness campaigns, research, and dialogue to foster understanding of human rights matters.

The commission is presently headed by Executive Secretary Anthony Okechukwu Ojukwu, Esq.
