Lagos Sunday Market to Open on Friday

In a move aligned with the spirit of the Easter celebrations, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed that the food discounted sales programme known as ‘Ounje Eko’ Sunday Market will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024. This directive was announced by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, on Thursday.

The vendors will be present at 57 centers spread across the five divisions of the state, except the state secretariat market, offering various items at a 25% discount from the regular market prices.

Amongst the items available for sale are food staples like rice, beans, pepper, bread, eggs, and garri. This discount market initiative is part of the EKO CARES program aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by the people of Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu has reassured that his administration, in collaboration with the Special Dispensation Advisory Committee on Social Interventions (SPEDAC), will diligently work to alleviate the economic burdens on the people of Lagos. Other EKO CARES initiatives focused on health, education, and transportation will also be officially launched soon.

The pilot scheme of the “Ounje Eko” Market, which commenced on Sunday, March 17, 2024, will continue post the Easter celebrations. Sanwo-Olu had initially instructed that food products at the “Ounje Eko” food markets be offered at discounted rates across all five divisions of Lagos starting Sunday, March 17.

A statement from the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Omotoso, highlighted that these markets will provide a 25% discount to Lagosians on essential food items such as rice, beans, garri, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper.
