Kaduna Legislators Stand Firm Against Intimidation in Investigation

The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Yusuf Liman, issued a strong response on Wednesday to Bello El-Rufai, son of the former governor Nasir El-Rufai, who attempted to intimidate the House regarding the investigation into his father’s tenure.

An ad-hoc committee was established by the state House of Assembly on Tuesday to look into financial transactions, loans, grants, and project execution between 2015-2023 during ex-governor El-Rufai’s administration.

Bello, also a member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, expressed his displeasure through social media posts, which have since been deleted, calling for a “fight” and showing disrespect towards the state legislative body for initiating the investigation.

The Speaker, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Strategic Communications, Suraj Bamali, emphasized the importance of not obstructing the lawful duties of the State Assembly, especially by a federal lawmaker like Bello.

He reassured that the House would continue to fulfill its duty as a watchdog, ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law within the state.

Liman urged the people of Kaduna State to stand firm in their support for transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, while affirming that the Assembly’s focus remains on serving the state’s best interests.

Despite the threats and attempts at intimidation, the Kaduna State House of Assembly remains undeterred in its pursuit of justice and accountability. The Assembly is steadfast in its role of providing oversight and upholding the rule of law in Kaduna State.

In response to the concerning actions of Hon. Bello Elrufai, the Assembly stated, “We took an oath to uphold the integrity of our office and fulfill our duties diligently, irrespective of any forms of coercion or intimidation.”
