Governor Makinde of Oyo State to Collaborate with Investors for Tourism Development

Emphasizing his administration’s commitment, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State reiterated the state’s readiness to partner with investors to unleash the tourism potential of the region.

He highlighted the opportunities within the tourism sector that, if properly tapped, could lead to prosperity. Governor Makinde pointed out six key sites earmarked for development in the state: the Cultural Centre in Ibadan, Bower’s Tower, Eleyele Waterfront, Idere Hills, Iyake suspended lake, and Iyamapo Hills.

These remarks were made during the opening ceremony of the International Tourism Summit with the theme “#ITSOYOSTATE 2024,” which took place at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan, the state capital.

The governor pledged support and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure sustainable development, safeguard investments, and guarantee success in the tourism sector.

Speaking on the theme “Repositioning Tourism as a Drive for Sustainable Development in Oyo State,” Governor Makinde highlighted the administration’s focus on connecting all regions to attract tourists and create a conducive environment for tourism to flourish, enhancing the experience for business travelers.

The governor assured that the roads leading to Ikere Gorge Dam and Eruwa Agribusiness Hub would be repaired soon, as investors have indicated readiness to develop these sites.

Expressing gratitude to the delegates, investors, and participants at the event, Governor Makinde assured them of protecting their investments.

He stated: “When you hear about unlocking potentials, it signifies the need to tap into Nigeria’s untapped possibilities to reap the benefits they offer.

“Investors seek returns on their investments. Without the right approach to unlock these potentials, they may not realize the desired benefits.

“In Oyo State, we offer three types of partnerships: Public-Private Partnership, Public Development Partnership, and Hybrid Partnership. We have engaged investment advisors to outline investment opportunities and projections, ready to delve into these opportunities.

“We have identified six key tourism sites, including the Ibadan Cultural Centre, Bower’s Tower, Eleyele Water Front, Idanre Hill, Iyamapo Hill, and Iyake Suspended Lake, with specific expectations for their development and profitability projections.

“We have the location and marketing appraisals, proposed project concepts, and financial appraisals curated by a reputable tourism advisory firm. The government plays a crucial role in fostering partnerships for sustainable development. Investors always inquire about the government’s offerings,” he elaborated.

Delivering the welcome address, Onikepo Akande, the Chairperson of the Summit, mentioned that the summit’s theme was timely as the state aims to attract a broader investor market by promoting a new tourism image for sustainable development.

In her remarks, the Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, commended the state government for unveiling the hidden gems of the state through tourism, pledging the ministry’s support to explore potentials beyond the state.

In a goodwill message, former Governor of Cross River State and guest of honor, Donald Duke, highlighted the inclusive nature of tourism development in boosting the economy and attracting notable investors to the state.
