Government Halts Mining Operations in OAU and Surrounding Areas

Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, has issued a directive for the immediate suspension of all mining activities at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), including the university teaching hospital and its surroundings. This action is pending the completion of investigations into suspected illegal mining activities in the area.

The minister made this announcement following a meeting at the ministry headquarters in Abuja with OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, and the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi.

A statement released by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, stated that the suspension was implemented due to numerous complaints from students and residents about the detrimental impact of illegal mining activities on the local economy.

Alake mentioned that the ministry took immediate action to investigate the reported illegal mining activities following public outcry and media reports. These activities were deemed harmful to the environment and needed to be addressed.

The minister revealed that preliminary assessments confirmed the existence of mining operations near the university premises. Subsequently, all mining activities, whether legal or illegal, were halted for further scrutiny and investigation.

Further investigations were prompted after operators involved in illegal mining presented licenses and consent letters. To verify the authenticity of these documents, university authorities were invited for discussions.

After a productive meeting, Alake announced the indefinite suspension of all mining activities within and around the university premises until thorough investigations are completed.

During the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Bamire expressed appreciation for the opportunity to discuss the university’s potential involvement in mineral exploration and research.

Bamire highlighted the university’s expertise in geology and mining, emphasizing the need to establish a research and training facility focused on mineral resources.

Additionally, plans for the university to apply for an exploration license were mentioned, indicating the potential for valuable contributions to the mining sector.

Other attendees included Registrar Kamarudeen Bakare, Prof. Olatokunbo Alao from the Department of Geology & Geophysics, Dr. Anthony Owolabi from Physical Planning, Engr. Olawuyi Isaac from Maintenance Services, and virtually present Chief Medical Director Prof. John Okeniyi from OAU Teaching Hospital.
