Excitement builds as attorneys jump into the political arena for NBA presidency

Amidst the impending election for the Nigerian Bar Association President, ONOZURE DANIA delves into the backgrounds of aspirants vying for the position.

The current President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), is nearing the end of his tenure. Lawyers will cast their votes on July 20, 2024, to elect the 32nd President of the association.

An electronic voting system will be employed for the 2024 NBA election. This decision aims to facilitate seamless participation for members from different locations, as outlined by the association’s Electoral Committee led by Oluseun Abimbola (SAN).

The 2020 election stirred controversy when Olumide Akpata, from Edo State, competed and triumphed over candidates from the South-West, clinching the presidency with a substantial margin.

Going into the 2024 election, the contenders for NBA presidency include figures like former NBA General Secretary Afam Osigwe (SAN), former NBA Lagos State branch chairman Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN), Chairman of NBA Institute of Continuing Legal Education Tobenna Erojikwe, and immediate-past NBA General Secretary Mrs Joyce Oduah.

Joyce Oduah, the sole female candidate, brings a wealth of experience and leadership from her tenure as Vice President West Africa, Pan African Lawyers Union, and past roles within the NBA.

Tobenna Erojikwe, born in Luton, England, and hailing from Nnewi in Anambra State, has a diverse legal background including extensive international experience and a commitment to urban regeneration.

Chukwuka Ikwuazom, renowned for his expertise in taxation and litigation, also boasts of a strong legal background with a focus on commercial disputes and risk management.

Afam Osigwe, a seasoned leader in NBA circles at both branch and national levels, adds to the mix of candidates with his experience and prior bids for the presidency.

As the anticipation grows ahead of the 2024 NBA election, the race for the presidency promises to be a dynamic and closely watched affair.
