Edo State Police Command Re-arrests Escaped Prisoner from Jail Break During #EndSARS Protest

A 58-year-old prisoner named Jacob Alonge, who fled from the Benin Correctional Centre during the 2020 #EndSARS protest in Edo State, has been re-arrested by the Edo State Police Command.

Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, made this known to the press in Benin City, as reported by NewsNow.

According to CP Adegboye, Alonge had been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by the Edo High Court for the crime of raping his own daughter, Gift Alonge.

CP Adegboye stated, “While the case was being tried in court, he declared that the case would never conclude. Sadly, his daughter and other witnesses mysteriously passed away before the case ended, but he was eventually convicted.

“Despite managing to escape during the 2020 #EndSARS protest, he evaded capture. However, his actions have caught up with him, leading to his re-arrest and subsequent return to custody where he belongs.”

Referring to the convict as a dangerous individual unfit to coexist with society, CP Adegboye mentioned that the convict, a repeated rapist, had absconded during the #EndSARS prison break at the Benin custodial centers.

Upon receiving credible intelligence that the fugitive was located at Ososo community in Akoko-Edo local government, police personnel from the Command conducted an operation to detain him. Nonetheless, certain troublemakers from the community resisted the arrest efforts.

After overcoming the resistance, the convict was successfully re-apprehended and transported back to the police Command, CP Adegboye revealed.

Furthermore, the commissioner urged the community members not to harbor criminals as they could potentially become victims in the future, highlighting that criminals do not maintain enduring alliances.

During an interview with journalists, the escaped prisoner explained that he had fled to his village as everyone was taking advantage of the chaos caused by the #EndSARS protest to escape from the prison.
