Probe Initiated by NASS Regarding Safety Concerns in the Aviation Sector

Plans have been announced by the Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Aviation to investigate alleged malpractices within the Safety Investigations Bureau and airlines operating in Nigeria.

Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Technology, Abiodun Akinlade, revealed this on Sunday, emphasizing the committee’s commitment to ensuring the safety of both local and international air travelers.

Highlighting the priority placed on citizens’ safety by the 10th National Assembly, he mentioned that a summit is being considered for all industry stakeholders and operators to adhere to global safety standards.

“The committee will not condone any actions that compromise passengers’ safety in a bid to reduce costs,” Akinlade stated.

Pointing out existing gaps in the aviation sector that require attention, the joint committees from the upper and lower legislative chambers are eager to address these issues for the benefit of air passengers.

“The envisioned summit aims to rectify deficiencies in the existing legislations governing airline operations in Nigeria, ultimately bolstering the industry and ensuring compliance with global norms,” he affirmed.

To tackle current industry challenges, legislative amendments will be proposed by the lawmakers, Akinlade added.

Assuring further actions upon resumption, he indicated that investigations will delve into the underlying causes of industry problems, including soliciting audit reports from airlines and the Safety Investigation Bureaus.
