At least one person has died and twelve others have been injured, seven seriously, after a driver ran over a group of people in front of the Caen train station, in northern France.
“On Wednesday, August 26, at approximately 10:15 p.m., a driver ran over a group of people gathered near the tram stop on Place de la Gare,” reported the mayor of Caen, Aristide Olivier, in a publication on networks.
In it he detailed that, as a result of the event, “one person has died”, while seven are in critical condition and the rest have suffered minor injuries, a balance that he described as “particularly serious”.

As for the person responsible, Olivier highlighted that, “thanks to the quick action of the Police and the use of security cameras, the suspect was quickly arrested and taken into custody.” “It did not appear in the intelligence records, but it did appear in the Police records for traffic violations,” he revealed.
In the heat of the events, “the Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation for homicide and assault with a knife,” the mayor said before extending his “deepest condolences to the victims and their families” and thanking “the emergency and security services for their rapid response and mobilization.”
So far no official explanations have been released about the reason for what happened, although the French network BFMTV has gathered, citing a source close to the investigation, that everything would have arisen from a fight in a bar near the train station.
The driver fled the scene after the accident and was later arrested in Ouistreham, a town located about 15 kilometers north of Caen, according to the same sources.
Those run over would be mostly foreigners, including Afghans, Egyptians and Bangladeshis, according to police sources indicated to the French newspaper ‘Le Figaro’.
It states that the suspect was driving a black German car. According to the aforementioned newspaper, it would be Ibrahim I., 26 years old and born in Russia.
