A Carpenter Receives a Life Sentence for Raping a 12-Year-Old Neighbor’s Daughter

A 26-year-old carpenter named Tayo Akinboyewa has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court. This verdict comes after he was found guilty of engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with his neighbor’s 12-year-old daughter, a primary school pupil.

The conviction was based on the victim’s testimony, which the judge deemed reliable and supported by medical evidence. Akinboyewa’s own admission of having sexual relations with the victim, as well as testimonies from the victim’s mother and the Investigative Police Officer, further linked him to the crime.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, noting that Akinboyewa took advantage of the victim’s vulnerability and breached her trust as a neighbor. He highlighted the need to protect children from such exploitation and condemned the defendant’s lack of remorse.

Given the gravity of the crime and its impact on the victim, Akinboyewa was sentenced to life imprisonment as mandated by the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. The judge underscored the importance of upholding justice and safeguarding vulnerable individuals in society.

The prosecution’s case, supported by multiple witnesses and evidence, proved that the offense occurred in May 2021 on Titilayo Street, Oshodi, Lagos State.
