Appeal for Support from Bauchi State Government by Children of Late Widow Involved in Ramadan Zakat Stampede

The late widow, Hassana Adamu, left behind thirteen children who are now seeking assistance from the Bauchi State government. She tragically lost her life in a stampede during the Ramadan zakat collection at the AYM Shafa head office on March 24, 2024.

On that fateful day, a stampede occurred around 10 am at the Shafa Holdings Company Plc headquarters along Jos Road, leading to the death of seven women, including 53-year-old Hassana Adamu.

Reports indicate that a large crowd of mostly women had gathered for the distribution of zakat items by a Bauchi-based philanthropist. The distribution process started smoothly with beneficiaries being called in groups, but unrest among others resulted in a chaotic rush to enter the premises.

Nafisa Adamu, the eldest child of the family, emphasized in a recent interview the immense void left by her mother’s untimely passing. Their mother had been the family’s main provider until her demise, as their father was deceased.

Describing their mother as a pillar of strength who took care of their needs and supported their education and livelihoods, Nafisa expressed the family’s struggles since her passing.

The family received some support from the Shafa company after the incident, which included food supplies and financial assistance. However, the aid provided is only a temporary relief, lasting for two to three months.

Now, the children seek additional support from the government for food, educational needs, and potentially starting a business to sustain themselves in the long run.

Following the tragic incident, the Abdulmuminu Foundation, linked to AYM Shafa, reached out to families of the victims with donations. The foundation expressed deep regret over the stampede and pledged to investigate the circumstances to prevent such tragedies in the future.

They assured support for those affected by the incident and committed to learning from the tragedy to enhance safety measures at their events.
