The demand for the sack of the governing council of Cross River State University

Calling upon Governor Bassey Otu, the University of Cross River State Alumni association has requested the dissolution of the governing council of the institution.

A communique was issued at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, and was signed by the National Secretary, Njang Ndoma.

The association has instructed its legal team to take immediate legal action to halt the funding of all activities and claims made by the governing council of the institution.

Accusing the council of incompetence, the alumni stated that it is straining the institution’s finances by convening unnecessary meetings to obtain sitting allowances for its members at the expense of staff welfare.

Urging the governor to overhaul the council and appoint individuals well-versed in university operations, the alumni emphasized the need for the council to comply with the laws governing the University.

They pointed out that over the past four years, the council has failed to bring in any funds or projects for the university.

Asserting the supremacy of the University’s establishment law, the alumni emphasized the necessity for all university organs, including the governing council, to adhere to the regulations at all times.

“The current composition of the governing council is deemed inadequate, incompetent, and not working in the university’s best interests.

Since the council’s inauguration on June 6, 2020, it has contributed nothing to the university but has instead strained its finances by holding unnecessary meetings to obtain allowances for its members,” the alumni expressed.

“We urge the governor and the university’s visitor, His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, to dissolve the governing council immediately and reconstruct it with individuals knowledgeable about university operations, capable of attracting funds and projects, and formulating policies for the successful implementation of the institution’s ‘People’s First Agenda,'” they added.
