A 7.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Panama: the USGS rules out a possible tsunami in neighboring countries

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 shook the southeast of Panama this Friday, with a depth of 10 kilometers, reported the United States Geological Survey (USGS). On the other hand, according to a preliminary report from the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 4 kilometers.

This Friday, the United States Geological Survey registered a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in south-central Panama, accompanied by a possible tsunami alert, with no information currently available on victims or material damage.

The earthquake was identified at 7:56 p.m. this Friday (peninsular time in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands), 12:56 local time (17:56 GMT). It occurred 14 kilometers southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, with a hypocenter located 10 kilometers deep, according to the USGS.

The United States Tsunami Warning Center has already given the alert corresponding to a few minutes after the earthquake and that affects the rest of the Panamanian coast and “some coasts of Ecuador.”

The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama has warned of an immediate aftershock of preliminary magnitude 6.0, also without information on victims or damage for now.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was recorded near the town of Tonosí, located in southern Panama, and about 239 kilometers from the capital.

After the main earthquake, up to three aftershocks have been felt in different parts of the country. Some residents have once again perceived these subsequent movements, while attention remains on the evolution of the seismic activity and the possible damage caused.

Among other spaces, the Panama International Airport has temporarily closed as a security measure after the earthquake.

In the Panama Canal, vessel transit has not been interrupted, as reported by the authority of the interoceanic waterway. The operations have been carried out normally, although it is true that the emergency protocol has been activated.
