An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale was recorded this Friday in southern Mexico, with its epicenter in Ciudad Hidalgo (Chiapas state), near the border with Guatemala, without authorities reporting any fatalities or serious damage.
The earthquake took place southwest of this city at 08:48 local time (14:48 GMT), as reported by the National Seismological Service.
The Civil Protection Secretariat of Chiapas explained, in its X account, that it is “active” and in “constant monitoring” of the situation in the different regions of the state, without offering more details for the moment.
Tsunami warning
The earthquake, which occurred near the Mexican city of Puerto Madero, had a depth of just 10 km (6 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
After the earthquake, the United States Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning for the region. The earthquake shook buildings in Guatemala City, according to a Reuters witness. The tremor was also felt in El Salvador, according to another witness.
