The New York police arrested actresses Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder this Thursday during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his intervention at the UN General Assembly.
In photographs spread on social networks, Einbinder (known for the HBO series ‘Hacks’) can be seen being handcuffed by the city police (NYPD), while Sarandon appears being arrested by several officers.
At the demonstration, one of those called for today against Netanyahu, the police also detained Darializa Avila-Chevalier, Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives and supported by the mayor, Zohran Mamdani, according to The New York Post.
The newspaper highlights that, while she was detained and transferred to an NYPD bus, the politician could be seen shouting: “Free Palestine!”
Also at the protest were actress Cynthia Nixon, recognized for playing Miranda in ‘Sex and the City’, and Brad Lander, former city comptroller.
The protest was organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace organization and is one of the rallies planned for today in favor of Palestine and against Netanyahu’s participation in the UN.
This afternoon another demonstration will take place, called by the Palestinian Youth Movement, which will start from Bryant Park, in downtown Manhattan, and will reach the vicinity of the UN.
Despite the various demonstrations, Netanyahu spoke in the General Assembly, where he attacked Mamdani, whom he described as an “anti-Semite” who “praises criminals convicted of supporting Hamas.”
