Amnesty International denounces in its latest report that since January 2025, Donald Trump’s government has implemented a system of mass detention and deportation that promotes hate, xenophobic and racist speeches in order to expel the largest number of immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees from the United States. During Donald Trump’s second term, at least 11 people have died due to repression by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and Border Patrol agents.
The NGO concludes that the shootings against Marimar Martínez and Silverio Villegas González in Chicago, against Julio César Sosa-Celis, Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, and against Philip Brown and Justin Bryant Nelson in Washington are very clear cases in which federal agents used lethal force illegitimately, violating their human rights. And he adds that the unlawful homicides of Villegas González, Good and Pretti could respond to extrajudicial executions.
They warn of a systematic violation of human rights by immigration and border agents
They admit that federal agents from ICE and Donald Trump’s Border Patrol continue to operate with total impunity, which is why Esteban Beltrán – director of Amnesty International in Spain – directly calls for the dissolution of ICE. “Amnesty International is calling for the abolition of ICE, the United States government’s immigration police, while a series of reforms should prevent human rights violations from continuing to be committed against these communities,” says the director of AI Spain.
More than 150 interviews with Guatemalan, Honduran and Mexican immigrants in Washington, Chicago, New Orleans and Minneapolis – where, according to Amnesty International, ICE and the Border Patrol operate freely – have documented a wide range of human rights violations such as racial discrimination, intimidation, harassment, repression of protests, cruel, inhuman and arbitrary detentions that border on torture, incommunicado detention of those arrested, denial of procedural guarantees and even possible forced disappearances. And they regret the selective action in neighborhoods, businesses and other places where racialized communities reside. They claim that human rights violations were almost never followed by an investigation or accountability of their perpetrators.
The “kick on the door” method has become common in immigrant neighborhoods
According to the organization, federal and ICE agents broke down doors of homes without a court order and – wielding firearms – carried out raids in the middle of the night with the help of Black Hawk helicopters and carried out reckless vehicle chases. And not only that, but they report that illicit surveillance methods have even been implemented in immigrant communities with facial recognition technology.
