The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will not attend this Tuesday the reception offered every year by the US President, Donald Trump, to the heads of delegation of the countries on the occasion of the beginning of the 81st period of sessions of the UN Assembly in New York, “for agenda reasons.”
Government sources confirmed that, “for agenda reasons”, Sánchez will not be able to attend this event, which takes place every year, on the occasion of the UN high-level week.
No activities scheduled during Trump’s reception
The same sources explained that the agenda of the Chief Executive this week is prepared well in advance and the American president sends his invitations to attend this meeting with little margin due to security reasons, so Sánchez will not be able to attend it.
This is shown in the official program of his activities for this Tuesday, which does not include, a priori, any event he will attend in the afternoon, coinciding with that reception. Sánchez also did not attend Trump’s reception last year, which was attended by the King, who chaired the Spanish delegation.
Sánchez did attend this event the first two years of his term as president, in 2018 and 2019, which he attended with his wife, Begoña Gómez, while in 2020 and 2021 there were no meetings due to the covid-19 pandemic. He was present at those offered by Biden, both in September 2022 and September 2023, but in 2024 he did not attend, since it coincided with his intervention at the UN General Assembly.
