The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has raised the possibility of launching a massive attack against Iran by asking: “When should I blow up the entire nation?”, according to a Fox News journalist.
In a conversation with the network’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, Trey Yingst, Trump has assured that the war is in a “decision phase” and has anticipated that “very important things” will happen in the coming days while he evaluates different alternatives.
Yingst has detailed that the president confided to him that among the options he considers are “eliminate Iran, let them rot economically or reach an agreement.” He has also indicated that Trump expressed his willingness to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to participate this week in the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Concern in the Republican ranks ahead of the November elections
These demonstrations add to those made by the American magnate last Thursday in an interview with Axios, where he stated: “I have to make an important decision. Do I want to go in and annihilate them (the Iranian regime) or not? It is an important decision. With me, anything can happen.”
Trump’s statements come at a time of increasing erosion of his popularity, due to the impact on the domestic economy of higher gasoline prices caused by the war with Iran. This unrest is worrying in the ranks of the Republican Party, who fear that the conflict in the Middle East will affect their expectations for the mid-term elections on November 3.
