The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Friday that the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement that will allow the North American country to develop a significant military presence on the island. According to Trump, the pact will also prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases or making certain sensitive investments in Greenland without express authorization from Washington.
The American president has explained in a publication in Truth Social that the agreement has no expiration date and guarantees that the United States will “forever” have full capacity to do what it deems necessary in Greenland to guarantee the security of the island and the United States.
“Furthermore, from now on, no adversary of the United States will ever be able to have a base in Greenland, maintain a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our express written approval,” Trump wrote.
Trump has announced that his Government will work to establish an “extensive” military presence in Greenland, although he has not specified where it will take place. As he has indicated, the United States will collaborate with Greenlandic citizens to achieve this.
The US president has celebrated the agreement as a “magnificent solution” and has assured that none of his predecessors had been able to reach a pact of these characteristics.
Trump justifies his claims for security in the Arctic
In recent months, Trump has defended his claims to Greenland by appealing to security reasons and the alleged military presence of Russia and China on the island and in the Arctic region. In his publication this Friday, the US president insisted that the agreement will guarantee and defend both the security of Greenland and that of the United States and has highlighted that the pact will be valid indefinitely.
“We feel very honored and proud of what just happened,” said Trump, who described the agreement as a “dream come true for the United States” and as a “historic and special” event.
