Like every 4th of July, the United States dresses up to party. The country celebrates the anniversary of its independence with parades, fireworks and events throughout the country. Specifically, this year, Americans celebrated the 250th anniversary of this celebration. However, at a time when polarization in this country is more than evident, Onda Cero’s US correspondent, Agustín Alcalá, explained on Onda Cero’s Julia en la Onda program how, this time, the event was marked by high temperatures but also by political division.
During his speech on the program presented by Julia Otero, Alcalá reported that the main event, led by President Donald Trump in Washington, had to be delayed due to the electrical storm that accompanied the day. Additionally, the correspondent stated that the Secret Service had to forcibly remove Trump supporters from the MAGA movement because they did not want to leave the National Mall due to the risk of storms.
Finally, the president appeared with his wife to give his famous speech. All of this in an event that concluded with a pyrotechnic display with approximately 850,000 rockets that, according to Agustín Alcalá, exploded “halfway” because it began to rain in the North American capital. The correspondent also highlighted that much of the country suffered high temperatures and strong storms that disrupted the celebrations.
The repetitive “God Bless America”
Beyond the celebration of the 4th of July, correspondent Agustín Alcalá assured that Donald Trump has taken advantage of the day to reinforce his political discourse. All of this, as Alcalá comments, with the ‘excuse’ of holding the elections of mid-term next November. As the journalist explained, the president has a new argument and that is that the country is no longer threatened by socialism, but by “the communists that we defeated during the Cold War.”
After making the MAGA movement the protagonist of United States Independence Day, Alcalá concludes that this 250th anniversary has shown an “absolutely divided” nation where even the planned events have been “a failure.”
