The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has regretted the air attack that Israel unleashed this Sunday against the south of Beirut, a bombing that “should not have happened”, and generally called for calm both in Tel Aviv and the Lebanese Hezbollah militias to cease hostilities because it is “very close” to agreeing on the memorandum of understanding with Iran to open a firm peace process.
This afternoon Israel launched several missiles against an apartment building in the Dahiya neighborhood, in the south of Beirut and a stronghold of Hezbollah, in response to what it has denounced as several drones carrying explosive charges against its territory.
The Israeli attack has resulted in at least three deaths and 15 injuries, while the impacts of the alleged drones have caused no victims, hence Trump, in his message on his platform
“Israel has the right to defend itself from threats, but the attack to which it was responding was minor and inconsequential; no one was injured or killed, and it should not interrupt this important process,” said the North American president.
Trump celebrates his 80th birthday this Sunday with a major mixed martial arts event at the White House and the hope of closing this preliminary agreement with Iran. The US president declared himself convinced this past Saturday that the signing would take place today but throughout the day the Iranian negotiators have expressed their deep skepticism due to the technical issues that remain to be closed and, above all, due to the bombing in Dahiya.
The security of the Hezbollah bastion is an unappealable condition for Tehran, a great supporter of the party-militia, to sit down to negotiate.
“This morning’s attack in Beirut should not have happened, especially on such a special day, when we are so close to a peace agreement with Iran,” Trump commented before calling for calm.
“There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other group, including Hezbollah, against Israel. This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace,” he concluded.
