29-Year-Old Dispatch Rider Faces Charges for Alleged Theft of Gold Jewellery


Appearing before the Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, the police in Lagos brought charges against Chigaemezu Kingsley, a 29-year-old dispatch rider, accusing him of stealing gold jewellery valued at N2.7 million.

Residing at No. 8, Muyiwa Close, Off Ajayi Road, Ikeja Lagos, Chigaemezu faced a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretense and theft.

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, the alleged incidents took place on April 2 in Aguda, within the Lagos Magisterial District.

It was reported that Chigaemezu disappeared with a package containing the expensive gold jewellery meant for delivery to a customer at Sangotedo Ajah.

After unsuccessful attempts to contact Chigaemezu, the complainant, Bunmi Agbaje, who had enlisted the services of the rider, brought the case to the attention of the police.

The Prosecutor stated that these actions violated sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Magistrate Mrs. Sanusi Adagun granted the suspect bail in the amount of N1 million, requiring two responsible sureties to provide a matching sum.

One of the sureties must be a blood relation and present proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government for three years. The case was adjourned until April 18 for further trial.
