Wike: No land grabbers will escape consequences

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, emphasized that the FCT Administration will take strict action against land grabbers, without exemption based on status.

During a recent visit by officials of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, REDAN, FCT Chapter, in Abuja, Wike issued this stern warning.

Highlighting the prevalence of land grabbing, Wike pointed out the involvement of individuals from various sectors in this illicit activity.

He asserted, “As a government, we are committed to addressing this issue decisively, irrespective of the position or influence of those implicated.”

Describing the situation as regrettable, the minister expressed concerns about people illegally acquiring land solely for personal enrichment.

He revealed that a significant number of allocation requests received by the FCTA were not genuine developmental initiatives but rather attempts to secure land titles for ulterior motives.

“This practice of seizing government land only serves to benefit individuals at the government’s expense, without contributing to alleviating the housing shortage,” he added.

To tackle this challenge, the FCTA has mandated that developers demonstrate financial capability to qualify for land allocations within the FCT.

Moreover, Wike disclosed that developers must furnish an undertaking from a reputable commercial bank affirming their financial preparedness for the envisioned development projects.
