Lawyer Commends 5 Lawmakers for Upholding Constitutional Responsibilities Amid Rivers Crisis

A lawyer and activist, Justice Osai Ahiakwo, praised the five PDP lawmakers who elected a Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, acknowledging their dedication to fulfilling their constitutional obligations in governance.

Speaking in Calabar, Ahiakwo highlighted the significance of the selection of Victor Oko-Jumbo as Speaker, emphasizing that it signifies the presence of non-APC members among the lawmakers and underscores the legitimacy of their actions.

He noted the need for urgent intervention from the National Assembly to address the embarrassing situation and stressed the importance of the Federal Government’s role in upholding democratic principles enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

“The members of the Assembly who elected a new Speaker have demonstrated a strong commitment to carrying out their constitutional duties in governance. It is essential for them to uphold the integrity of the legislative branch as mandated by the 1999 Constitution,” he stated.

Despite concerns that their actions might disrupt peace and unity in Rivers State, Ahiakwo expressed confidence in the longstanding tradition of peaceful coexistence among the people of Rivers, suggesting that the state will weather any political turmoil instigated by self-serving individuals.

Addressing the other State House of Assembly members, he urged them to recognize that they were elected by the people to represent them in the legislative arm of government and should act accordingly.

He expressed optimism that the crisis would soon be resolved, with the judiciary playing a critical role in bringing about a resolution.
