Venezuela releases a hundred political prisoners, among them the Spanish-Venezuelan Alejandro Canales

The Venezuelan authorities have released this Monday 22 prisoners who were detained in different penitentiary centers in the country, including the Spanish-Venezuelan citizen Alejandro González de Canales Plaza, ex-husband of the lawyer Rocío San Miguel, in a new maneuver by the Government of the acting president Delcy Rodríguez after the release of around twenty prisoners last week, including five Spaniards.

As confirmed by the Venezuelan human rights organization Foro Penal, nine people have been released from ‘La Crisálida’ prison and another 13 from ‘Rodeo 1’.

“We are verifying other releases of Venezuelans and foreigners that also took place this morning,” adds the organization.

On social networks, the PP deputy, Sergio Sayas, has expressed “immense joy” for the release of González de Canales Plaza, “a Spanish Venezuelan whose case I have followed in a more particular way thanks to his family and friends.” “Enough is enough. All political prisoners must be released,” he stressed.

Hours earlier, the Italian Foreign Minister himself, Antonio Tajani, had confirmed that two Italian citizens have been released. Alberto Trentini and Mario Burlò, identified by the minister himself, are already at the Italian Embassy in Caracas.

The Venezuelan prison service raises releases to 116

For its part, the Venezuelan Penitentiary Service has reported in its own statement that in the last few hours there have been 116 new releases. “These measures have benefited people deprived of liberty for events associated with altering the constitutional order and threatening the stability of the Nation,” the statement states.

According to the balance sheet of the Venezuelan authorities, these releases are added to the 187 registered during the month of December 2025 and follow “the comprehensive review” initiated by the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro.

“This process has maintained its continuity under the direction of the acting president Delcy Rodríguez, within the framework of a policy oriented towards justice, dialogue and the preservation of peace. This review procedure will be maintained permanently and continuously, always in strict accordance with the current legal system,” he noted.
