Unexpected turn in Romania: the pro-Russian Georgescu wins the presidential elections in the first round

The ultranationalist, pro-Russian and anti-Semitic candidate has won in the first round of the presidential elections. Against all odds, the until now prime minister, the social democrat Marcel Ciolacu, is out of combatwhich despite being a clear favorite has received the setback at the polls, losing by less than 1000 votes. “I believe that Romanians are behind this result and each candidate, regardless of their political option,” said the prime minister.

With 22.9% of the votes, Calin Georgescu –very critical of the EU, of NATO, reluctant to support Ukraine and has entrusted his entire campaign to Tik ToK– will compete for the presidency with the liberal journalist, Elena Lasconi, who hopes to become the first woman to come to power. It will be next December 8th. Georgescu is convinced that “the economic insecurity that the Romanian people have suffered for 35 years has become insecurity for political parties,” and affirms that the Romanian people have cried out “peace!”.

It’s the first time since the fall of the Soviet Bloc that the Romanian Social Democratic Party fails to advance to the second round.
