Two strong explosions took place this Tuesday in Damascus, specifically, near the Four Seasons hotel in the Syrian capital, coinciding with the visit of the French president, Emmanuel Macron. At the time of the explosion, the French leader was not aware of the events, since, as reported by French authorities, he was in the Presidential Palace on his way to meet with the president of Syria, Ahmed al-Charaa, and the respective delegations of both countries.
This visit, which is the first by a European head of state to the country since the Islamist coalition came to power, has not undergone any changes to its program, since, according to Elysée sources, the president’s agenda “continues.” Now, as reported by the official Al Ejbariya television, security forces have begun an operation to identify the perpetrators and, for the moment, no victims have been reported.
First visit by a European leader to Syria with mishaps
Regarding the events that occurred in the vicinity of the hotel where Macron was staying, eyewitnesses observed a column of smoke in an area near the French leader’s accommodation, in the center of the capital. However, Macron had left hours earlier to meet with his Syrian counterpart. According to initial information, the incident occurred in a garbage container and in a parked vehicle.
