Travellers on Sagamu-Benin Expressway Abducted and One Fatality Reported


Confirmation by the Ogun State Police Command came in on Monday regarding the abduction of several travellers at Ilisan/Iperu axis on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer, informed the press in Abeokuta about the incident, explaining that it occurred last Friday.

Odutola mentioned that the police could not provide a specific number of abductees, mentioning that one of the victims, who remains unidentified, was fatally shot by the abductors.

The PPRO detailed that the incident, classified as a case of armed robbery, murder, and kidnapping, transpired on the evening of Friday, May 3rd, around 6:55 pm.

“A group of approximately seven armed individuals with AK-47 rifles suddenly obstructed the Benin-Sagamu expressway,” she described.

“Upon arrival at the crime scene, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilisan found two vehicles riddled with bullet holes, along with another vehicle,” she added.

“Among the vehicles were a Lexus jeep 300 with the registration number LND 640 DY belonging to Chilaka Lugard and another Lexus jeep 350 registered as LSR 996 JF, owned by Kingsley Chineme,” Odutola stated.

“Inside the Lexus 350, a cross bag containing N113,000, two iPhones – an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 11 Promax were discovered,” she continued.

“Additionally, an unidentified man with a fatal gunshot wound to the head was found in one of the vehicles,” she mentioned.

“The third vehicle was transporting plantains, and the driver, who was part of the abduction but has since been released, was permitted to depart with the vehicle,” she elaborated.

“The two Lexus vehicles have been taken to the Ilisan police station,” she concluded.

Odutola highlighted that the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, in an urgent meeting on Monday, instructed the tactical commanders and the mobile squadron to pursue the culprits.

She revealed that the police commissioner had visited the crime scene and assured that the perpetrators would soon be brought to justice.
