A devastating incident unfolded on Monday evening in Afghanistan’s Herat province, where a mosque became the scene of a horrific shooting that resulted in the loss of six innocent lives and left one person injured.
Reports from the Interior Ministry spokesman, Abdul Mateen Qani, indicate that an unidentified assailant carried out the attack on worshippers at the mosque situated in the Guzara district.
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, has strongly condemned the violence, emphasizing the critical need for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and ensure they face justice.
At present, no group has come forward to claim responsibility for this heinous act.
While the country saw a decrease in attacks following the Taliban’s resurgence in August 2021, the presence of active militant offshoots linked to the Islamic State continues to pose a threat, with sporadic incidents of violence being reported.
