Tension in Seoul has increased again after the demonstrations that took place this Saturday between those who are for and against of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s arrest.
Nails 35,000 people have gathered in Gwanghwamun Square to protest against attempts to arrest Yoon following his failed declaration of martial law on December 3.
In the same place Protesters in favor of impeachment have also gathered final decision of the president, who was disqualified on December 14 and is awaiting the final decision of the Constitutional Court.
The groups for and against Yoon have coincided at the demonstration sites
The group in favor of the president later moved to the neighborhood where the president’s official residence is located. There, the main confederation of South Korean unions had called for another march against the leader. The unions have tried to break the police cordon and advance towards Yoon’s house, which has ended with violent clashes and two people arrested.
The arrest warrant expires on Monday
These demonstrations have occurred as a consequence of the failed attempt to arrest Yoon on Fridaysince the Presidential Security Service (PSS) prevented access to the operation deployed by the anti-corruption office.
The arrest warrant expires on Mondayso they will probably try again tomorrow. Yoon’s lawyers have tried to annul the order, arguing that “only the Prosecutor’s Office can request an arrest for an alleged crime of insurrectionthe only one from which a South Korean president is not immune” and for which would be punished with life imprisonment or capital punishment.
