The Italian Armed Forces have reported the discovery of around ten explosive devices from the Second World War. The bombs, weighing around 500 kilos, were located on a section of the railway line that connects Rome with Naples, in southern Italy.
Traffic has been suspended while the removal work is completed, after the explosives were found during the works on a section of the line, near the town of Formia, in the province of Latina, located in the Lazio region, according to the newspaper “La Repubblica”.
The artifacts were found in an excavation trench located under the railway, in an area close to residential areas. The incident led to the activation of the emergency protocol, which led to the suspension of rail traffic between Formia and Minturno and the action of the Army’s explosives disposal team.
The Prefecture of Latina reported the event and ordered the immediate activation of the 21st Engineer Regiment of Caserta, a specialized unit of the Italian Army in the intervention and deactivation of explosives, after the area was secured by the police forces.
What will they do with them?
Ordnance disposal experts have explained that the bombs will be transported during the night in a special vehicle, escorted by law enforcement, to a quarry set up for temporary storage.
