The United States authorities have asked their citizens residing in Iran to leave the country “now” or, failing that, to seek refuge, given the possibility of “violent” protests and the authorities of the Central Asian country to intensify security measures, on a day in which delegations from the two countries meet in Muscat, Oman, to begin negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
“Leave Iran now. Have a plan to leave Iran that does not depend on the help of the US Government,” reads the alert issued by the virtual US Embassy in Iran, in which it also invites its nationals to prepare evacuation and refuge plans, avoid demonstrations and maintain a “low profile.”
The warning, which applies to all Iranian territory, alleges that “protests in Iran continue to intensify and could become violent, with the consequent risk of arrests and injuries”, so Tehran could resort to closing roads, interrupting public transport and blocking access to mobile networks and the internet.
