The urgent need for collective effort in enhancing security management in Nigeria – Insights from UNICAL VC

Prof. Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal), emphasized the necessity of a unified approach to addressing the current surge in insecurity across the country.

Her remarks were made at a Peace And Security summit organized jointly by the Institute for Universal Harmony (TIFUH) and the Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).

Obi pointed out the timeliness and significance of the summit, especially considering Cross River State’s efforts to combat criminal activities.

In lieu of her absence, Prof. Anim Ajake, the Dean of Environmental Science and Chairman of the Committee of Deans, reiterated the essential role of collective commitment in promoting peace.

The emphasis was placed on the utilization of dialogue and cooperation to combat crime effectively, stressing that security issues are pivotal to national progress.

Furthermore, she reiterated her administration’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing security concerns.

Dr. Charles Bassey, the President of TIFUH, also chimed in, emphasizing the imperative for security agencies to embrace innovative strategies in overcoming the prevailing security challenges plaguing the nation.

He highlighted the severe repercussions of cultism, gangsterism, kidnapping, human trafficking, and communal conflicts, which have severely impacted society.

He expressed, “Security experts must fully embrace their duties to mitigate the growing insecurity in Nigeria. It is equally crucial for the community to actively advocate for peace, as it is a collective responsibility.”
